POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The Packaging Engineer II, in conjunction with Manufacturing, R&D, Quality Assurance and Marketing Groups, ensures
the materials of construction and design of packaging components, for Inner and Outer Nutrition products, provide
appropriate appearance, handle shelf life requirements and ensures compliance with all company specifications and
governmental regulations in markets serviced. The Packaging Engineer II will be expected to keep current with packaging
technologies and trends and looks to apply that knowledge to new and existing projects, and creates and maintains the
documentation in Agile system to support in-house and contract manufacturing.
DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:
Responsible for development and maintenance in the Agile System of all Packaging Documentation to include
component specifications, generation of
engineering
Change Requests (ECRs), Bills of Material (BOM). Work with
in-house manufacturing and contract manufacturers to ensure that packaging processes provide consistent operating
conditions and safety/integrity of finished products and is responsible for troubleshooting problems with both materials and
processes as required.
Participate in multifunctional Marketing driven teams, as required, and is the primary source of knowledge related to
the use and feasibility of new packaging concepts by defining the details related to design, materials of construction and
costs of primary and secondary packaging components and provides input on appearance, design-function relationships
and methods of production.
Evaluate and select new materials and packages for in-house and third party contracted products.
Conduct validation/qualification line work at contract manufacturers to ensure packages and processes meet all
requirements.
Evaluate and perform tests on primary and secondary packaging.
Develop pallet patterns for in house and turnkey manufacturer use.
Direct investigations of customer complaints with quality assurance department into issues regarding packaging
quality, product contamination, tolerances, specifications, delivered condition of products and ensures remedial action.
Develop SOP's to ensure that in-house and contract manufacturer's processes consistently meet all required operating
standards
Qualifications -
Skills:
Strong inter-departmental communication skills with Marketing, Purchasing, Operations, Licensing and a basic working
knowledge of Windows, Outlook, MS Project, Excel and Word
Ability to solve practical problems and carry out responsibilities under general supervision and work in a dynamic, fastpaced
manufacturing environment and be a strong team player
Experience:
5 years Pkg. materials development experience working in the Nutrition, Pharmaceutical, OTC or Processed Food
industries package development or engineering, especially with specification documentation with plastics, paperboard,
corrugated, film and labels
Education:
B.S. Degree in Packaging Engineering
PREFERRED
Qualifications:
Demonstrated history of achieving results with generating new packaging alternatives and ideas in response to new
product lines, consumer trends, changes in the marketplace, developments in technology, cost savings opportunities,
efficiency improvements in the supply chain
7 years Pkg. materials development experience working in package development or engineering, especially with
specification documentation with plastics, paperboard, corrugated, film and labels
Good working knowledge of cGMP's, HACCP/AIB, and FDA regulations in Food and Nutrition industries
Masters degree in Packaging Engineering or MBAEstimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
